Believe in the magic of Christmas...

Hello!

It's time for another Scenic Saturday over on the Bellarific Blog and today's card is going to take us to the South Pole for Christmas. This recent release saw a whole waddle of naughty and nice penguins added to the Stamping Bella store, all of them just as cute as can be. Which made it difficult to choose which one to ink up first. I finally landed on Penguin's Big Catch simply because I liked the idea of coloring him out on the open ocean with a large ice flow in the background. Creating that ice flow takes a bit of planning because you need to rely on the white of the card stock you are coloring on to become the ice. Meaning, you need to color the sky above it and the sea below it first to establish the basic outline of the ice. Now once you have those two areas all colored in you can't leave the ice as is, it will just look like you forgot to color in a large part of your design... the ice needs shading too. To start I grabbed a very light BG0000 and ran a wavy, serpentine line parallel to the top of the white ice. Then I proceeded to pull some of that color down, creating the nooks and crannies on the edge of that ice shelf. Once my light and dark areas where established I simply grabbed some light and mid tone greys as well as some slightly darker BG markers to deepen those shadows. To help sell the size of that ice flow and how far in the distance it was I decided to add in some more tiny penguins marching down its slope to the water below. You don't have to be an artist to draw these, I promise! Simply make a small C shaped mark with a mid tone grey marker, fill in the middle with a very light grey then once that is dry, dot on a small spot of orange at the top of the curve of the C for the beak... voila! Now this happy fishing penguin is not so alone on Christmas morning. :)

Have a wonderful weekend bellas!

Love this thank you for sharing how you did the ice, I find it really tricky when something needs to be white
